Downtown Dental offers our patients state of the art digital X-rays. They take less time AND expose you to LESS radiation. The reduction in radiation can be anywhere from 50-90% less than traditional film x-rays. With much less radiation and excellent quality, decay can be caught earlier and with less risk to the patient due to the lower doses of radiation. At the same rate, there is no increase in the frequency which x-rays are taken!

Dental radiographs (x-rays) are necessary for preventative care.  They provide additional diagnostic information, that when paired with information from the visual examination allow for thorough disease diagnosis.  For comprehensive treatment planning, x-rays are a must.  Without them, disease may go unnoticed, resulting in larger and potentially less treatable issues at a later time.

What do x-rays show?

  • Infections
  • Loss of bone
  • Pathology including oral cancer
  • Cavities in between teeth
  • Developmental irregularities
  • Orthodontic issues
  • Anything under the gums that are not able to be visualized

Diagnosing dental problems early on can save you time, money, unneeded pain!

When do we take xrays?

At a new patient exam a full series of x-rays is taken to allow for comprehensive diagnosis and treatment planning.  And for those worried about radiation, did you know you are exposed to more environmental radiation on a cross country flight than you are to a full series of x-rays?

Typically after that, bitewing x-rays are taken annually.  We say typically because people who do not have a history of decay may only need them every 2 years, whereas someone with a high cavities rate may need them every 6 months.

Also, extraoral, Panoramic xrays are taken as needed for orthodontic evaluation, wisdom tooth evaluation, evaluation of periodontal health, and head and neck pathology screening. It is even recommended people with no teeth have a Pan x-ray taken to screen for pathology!
