An urban, technologically up-to-date and professional environment coupled with caring and friendly staff make Downtown Dental Syracuse a great place to get my dental care. Dr. Mead is gentle, friendly and explains things well so that I always feel like I know what’s going on. I’ve especially enjoyed being part of the process of designing my crowns on the computer and watching them being created before my eyes. A crown in 90 minutes. One appointment. No fuss, no muss. Totally worth it for me.

When is this Necessary?

A Tooth Extraction may become necessary when a tooth is severely damaged by decay, gum disease, or trauma. In addition to standard extractions, some wisdom teeth are able to be extracted at Downtown Dental. If you are planning to replace the missing tooth with an implant or would like a better fitting bridge, bone can be grafted into the extraction site at the time of the extraction. See our section on dental implants for more information on them. Implants can be placed and restored at DDS!

Frequently Asked Questions

1). How do I mentally prepare for oral surgery if I feel anxious?

It’s completely normal to feel anxious before oral surgery. Taking time to understand the procedure, discussing sedation options, and knowing what to expect can help ease your concerns. Our team is here to guide you every step of the way so you feel informed, comfortable, and confident going into your visit.

2). Will I feel anything during oral surgery even with anesthesia?

You may feel slight pressure or movement during the procedure, but you should not feel pain. Anesthesia is carefully administered to keep you comfortable throughout your treatment.

3). How do I know if my condition is serious enough to require surgery?

Oral surgery may be recommended if you’re experiencing severe pain, infection, impacted teeth, or damage that cannot be treated with routine care. A thorough evaluation will help determine the best treatment for your specific needs.

4). Can oral surgery improve my overall oral health long-term?

Yes. Oral surgery often addresses underlying issues that could worsen over time if left untreated. Treating these concerns helps protect your surrounding teeth, gums, and bone structure.

5). What should I expect on the day of my oral surgery appointment?

Your visit will include preparation, anesthesia, the procedure itself, and detailed aftercare instructions. Our team will ensure everything is well-organized and focused on keeping you comfortable throughout the process.

6). Can I drive myself home after oral surgery?

If your procedure involves only local anesthesia, you may be able to drive yourself home. However, if sedation is used, you’ll need someone to drive you for your safety.

7). How does oral surgery affect my daily routine in the first few days?

You may need to rest, avoid strenuous activity, and follow a softer diet during the initial healing period. Most patients return to light daily activities within a day or two, depending on the procedure.

8). Can I brush my teeth normally after oral surgery?

You can continue brushing and flossing, but it’s important to be gentle around the surgical area. Keeping your mouth clean while avoiding irritation will support proper healing.

9). What foods should I avoid after oral surgery?

It’s best to avoid hard, crunchy, spicy, or very hot foods at first. These can irritate the area and delay healing. Soft, easy-to-eat foods are recommended during recovery.

10). Will oral surgery affect my speech or appearance temporarily?

You may notice mild swelling or limited movement right after surgery, which can temporarily affect speech or appearance. These effects are normal and typically improve as healing progresses.
